Math Gym

Nobody necessarily likes to learn times tables just for fun, or let alone fractions for that matter, but because we encounter these math concepts in our daily life, we know these are very necessary to our wellbeing. Strong fundamentals such as fractions, decimals, sigma math (postivies, negatives, etc), are the key to ensuring confidence and willingness to engage within the classroom and beyond. Our Math Fundamentals course is meant to help students and their parents assess how strong their child’s fundamentals are and help ensure they are meeting and exceeding the expected state-level appropriate standards.

Through a series of diagnostic tests and custom modules designed with over a decade worth of experience in fundamentals instruction, students and families will be able to identify gaps in fundamental learning and have a set plan to address them.

Preliminary Diagnostic is given to all students to determine the range of their skillset. This diagnostic is structured around the state standard appropriate to their grade level and will allow us to place a starting point for your student as we design their customized program. This score will be compared against a final diagnostic at the end of the course so students and their famlies can see how much they have improved and/or which skills may need some additional and continued support.

Strategy Games

The art of strategy and strategic thinking is an invaluable skill that many students should be well aquainited with. Imagine planning out a paper or big research project but not have a strategy to make it happen?! But learning strategy doesn’t just have to be about making lists or processes, it can be an interactive and hands-on process in such scenarios as strategizing moves in a game, or how to properly proceed through a puzzle.

Students who take this course will work with their instructor who will guide them through techniques of strategy and planning, utilizing processes that we hope they then take with them and apply in their regular academic studies.

The final project will be the construction of a set of personalized board games that students will work together to design, build and test/play with each other. Learning how to think about strategy both from a navigation and creation perspective. By course end, students will *think* creatively in various situations.

Fun with Finance

Through a series of real-life case samples, students will navigate different elements ofworking with money, budgets and understanding how to spend wisely. They will learn to quantify and account for variables and events outside their control.

Students in this course will be presented with modules that mirror real-life samplings of places where money literacy is important but that uses math at the levels they are likely comfortable and familiar with. Over the course of the semester students will role-play out basics like “home economics” or “running a general store.” Within these units, they will be assigned characters to play and have to work as a team to navigate communal “problems” such as balancing a house budget or calculating how much inventory to order without overpaying or overspending.

By the end of the course, our goal is that your student will have a stronger understanding of what markets are and how they work. We also hope to give them a deeper appreciation for the importance of keeping up good financial skills, and how doing so can turn into long term rewards.

Science Adventures

Many students are exposed to science but perhaps not too familiar with the specifics of the scientific method or other avenues of scientific thinking. This course aims to change that, giving students a rich and immersive opportunity to gain a head-start on the fundamentals of scientific thought.

Through hands-on projects and presentations, students will learn about scientific concepts ranging from natural processes such as the water cycle, to basics of electricity generation and transport. These and other fascinating principles will be explored through group activities and projects intended to illustrate exactly how and why such principles guide the everyday processes that we live among.

By the end, students will not only understand and appreciate how to thing “scientifically” about things, but they will ideally be ready to take a strong scientific vocabulary and mindset back into their regular classrooms as they continue to inquire about the world around them.
