In the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, millions of refugees fled, with many seeking safety in Poland and the United States. Sabina Cherner and Sonia Girshin, both New York City-born daughters of Ukrainian-Jewish refugees, stepped up to support displaced Ukrainian children. Sabina volunteered at a Warsaw summer camp, where she saw the war’s profound impact on young children, while Sonia worked in New York, welcoming Ukrainian families and organizing resources at a Brooklyn charter school. Together, they founded Pal2U, a peer-tutoring initiative designed to support Ukrainian refugee students enrolled in the Hebrew Public network of schools. Pal2U provides English language tutoring and social and emotional support by connecting bilingual teens with these students. By fostering connections and easing cultural transitions, Pal2U has grown into a vital network helping children in the Hebrew Public community adapt to new lives while building meaningful friendships.
